Welfare

Student welfare is at the heart of the MCR community. Merton has two dedicated Welfare Officers on the Executive Committee, who are here to make every member of our community feel safe and supported throughout their time at Merton.

Each of our Welfare Officers is peer-support trained and together they organise weekly welfare activities to help you to balance various aspects of being a student. From the the graduate parenting scheme and the confidential listening service to the provision of contraceptives as well as other related sexual health items and literature, students’ health – physical and mental – is always a top priority for what the MCR can offer you.

Welfare provision at Merton does not stop at the two Welfare Officers. The MCR President is also a member of the College’s Welfare Team. The College Welfare Team comprises of various positions including two Junior Deans for Welfare, which are year-long and paid positions usually held by doctoral students at other colleges to minimise the risk of conflicts of interest. Additionally, while some colleges combine disciplinary roles with welfare provision, Merton makes a clear distinction between the those who apply disciplinary measures and those who provide health and welfare support. To learn more about the range of welfare provision offered by the College, make sure to check out the College’s welfare page.

If there is a welfare-related conversation which you do not feel comfortable having with a member of College, the University also has a strong range of welfare services.
